What It Is

ASTM A106 Grade B is seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. ASTM A106/A106M (active edition A106/A106M-26) covers NPS 1/8 to NPS 48 (DN 6 to DN 1200) with wall thickness per ASME B36.10M, and the pipe is suitable for bending, flanging and welding. ASME SA-106 Grade B is its counterpart in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II-A.

NPS 2 and above is hot finished unless otherwise agreed; NPS 1-1/2 and below may be cold drawn and is then heat treated at 650 C or higher after the final draw. Mill marking: ASTM A106 GR.B SMLS. Outer surface black varnish coated as supplied from the mill; bevelled ends (37.5 degrees) for butt welding.

Grade and Equivalents

Equivalents: ASME SA-106 Gr B, UNS K03006, DIN 17175 St 45.8 (1.0405, DIN withdrawn). EN 10216-2 P265GH and JIS G 3456 STPT410 are approximate equivalents, not one-to-one. Matching components: A234 WPB fittings, A105 flanges, A216 WCB valve bodies.

Dimensions and weights per ASME B36.10M. The size table in the listing images covers NPS 1/2 to 24 (OD 21.3 mm to 610 mm) in Sch 40, 80, 160 and XXS (XXS up to NPS 12). Example: NPS 4 Sch 40 is OD 114.3 mm x 6.02 mm wall, 16.08 kg/m. ASME B36.10M schedules: 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, STD, 60, 80, XS, 100, 120, 140, 160, XXS. Plain-end weight: kg/m = (OD - WT) x WT x 0.0246615 (OD and WT in mm). Lengths per the standard: single random 4.8-6.7 m, double random minimum average 10.7 m, or fixed lengths as ordered.

Standards and Tests

• Tension test
• Bend test for NPS 2 and under (cold bend 90 degrees round a mandrel 12 times the nominal diameter, without cracking)
• Flattening test for larger sizes, per the edition ordered
• Hydrostatic test on each length, or nondestructive electric test as the permitted alternative
• Chemical analysis to Table 1

Supply is usually against EN 10204 type 3.1 mill test certificates. PMI, UT and third-party inspection are done only when ordered.

ASME B31.3 allowable stress is 137.9 MPa up to 149 C, 115.1 MPa at 371 C and 78.6 MPa at 427 C, falling steeply above that. The standard flags possible graphitization in long high-temperature service.
